Pouteria campechiana

A slender and erect evergreen tree with cream coloured fragrant flowers, native to the highland areas of Central America.

The fruit is highly variable according to cultivar but generally round to oval, and matures to a yellow-orange colour hence its common name of ‘egg fruit’.

The fruit can be eaten fresh but because of it’s somewhat dry texture  is more often added to sweet custards or milk shakes.

Fruit are picked when they are beginning to colour, and they will ripen to yellow and soft within a week.

It has been grown successfully in parts of Adelaide including hills areas.
